.....Walk
west on Gittings Street and turn right at William. Head north
on William until you reach West Street, where you should turn
left. On the right hand sight of the street stands Holy Cross
Church, which was built by and for the neighborhood's German
immigrants between 1858 and 1885.
The
Holy Cross Parish was organized in 1859 by a German group
known as the Redemptionists. The Baltimore branch was an offshoot
of an international colony of mission societies with bases
in Belgium and Austria. The Redemptionists engaged in both
religious and intellectual pursuits and were extremely active
in the fields of teaching and community organization. So much
so that they followed German immigrants far outside of Baltimore
to the west into railroad and mining towns even establishing
new settlements of their own in the American Frontier.
